Children with Special Needs
“As special needs parents we don’t have the power to make life “fair,” but we do have the power to make life joyful.”
Family Support Network
Family Support Network of Northeastern NC provides services to families who have a child with a special need.
Families benefit from help and support from other families facing similar issues. The parent can also share available resources that could help a parent through challenges. With this information, families can make informed decisions about services and support.
FSN of NENC provides the following services:
- Support groups in Gates and Pasquotank Counties – contact Faith Mosley at firstname.lastname@example.org for meeting dates, times, and locations.
- Parent to Parent: A matching program for families who is having a difficult time coping with a special needs diagnoses, going through the transition process with the public school, or wanting resource information.
- Referral to services, such as: mental health, therapists/psychologists, etc.
- Requests to attend Individual Education Plan meetings with parents
Hurricane Season and COVID-19 Emergency Preparedness
Hurricane Season and COVID-19: How Families of Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs Can Be Prepared
Hurricane season will be different this year as NC continues to take precautions to slow the spread of COVID-19. This webinar series will address the most pressing topics and questions related to how individual preparedness, hurricane response, and recovery will be different due to COVID-19. Family members, caregivers, disability organizations, and emergency preparedness professionals are encouraged to attend all three sessions to help understand how to meet the needs of children and youth with special health care needs and those with disabilities in the event of a hurricane.
Child Find Event
In collaboration with the Pasquotank/Camden and Gates Local Interagency Coordinating Council (LICC), Child Find events offer free child development screenings for children ages 0-5, which include: speech, developmental, hearing, and vision.
These events ensure that all families have access to early intervention services within their community. A portion of funding for these events is provided by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

Circle of Parents
The Circle of Parents support group focus is parents with children with special needs. The group is parent-led and professionally facilitated. The support group focuses on Five Protective Factors: (1) Parental Resiliency, (2) Social Connections, (3) Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development, (4) Concrete Support in the Time of Need, (5) Social and Emotional Competence of Children. Circle of Parents provides a friendly and supportive environment for families to connect with other parents that have children with special needs. Participants form relationships, build leadership skills, learn how to advocate for their child, connect to resources and parent in a positive way. This program has been a part of Albemarle Alliance for Children and Families, Inc. since 2011. Circle of Parents is offered in Pasquotank and Gates Counties. What people are Saying about AACF
“Thank God you did this for us…”
Albemarle Alliance had a safety day and the fire department, police department, the Elks club and other sponsors were doing a carseat give away. This could not have come at a more perfect time. My man lost his job in April and was wrongfully denied unemployment while he looked for a job. My daughter turns 2 on the 22nd and desperately needed to upgrade her carseat. It's hard to do with NO MONEY. Thank God you did this for us and many other families. I'm gonna speak for everyone and say thank you to everyone involved. And a big thank you to Faith for informing our support group for my family's needs being met.

“…an Amazing program…”
I have been taking the incredible years program with Kathy and Jennifer, we are on week 9 I believe. I am so sad to know that we are half way done. It's an amazing program with wonderful teachers, they always remember what we (the class) have had issues with the previous week and ask, how it's coming along. They give us amazing advice or ways to handle different situations. They make you think, which is good.
The group discussion have been a blessing as well, I have met amazing local parents who I can lean on for support. I know we will be friends long after the program is over.
Thank you for the wonderful program and the teachers. I recommend anyone who is thinking about taking the program, should. It's been so helpful! The way I parent my 2.5 year old and my 4 month old have completely changed (for the better).
